Nicole and Bryce met through their mutual friend, Landon. Landon was (and still is) Nicole’s roommate, and went to high school with Bryce. Landon threw a LAN party in February 2012 where Nicole and Bryce first met. After unsuccessfully asking Nicole on a lunch date after the party, Bryce started his “long con.” Since Nicole refused to hang out with him in real life, Bryce got her in to online gaming and, after a few years, got her hooked on The Elder Scrolls Online. This is where they spent countless sleepless nights exploring, questing, raiding, and playing together in-game; their characters eventually getting married in-game for extra XP and gold (his plan was working.)
They went on one date/”not date” a couple of years before they went on their first official date at Disneyland. A little over five years later, they revisited Disneyland / Galaxy’s Edge to celebrate their five year anniversary. Nicole’s main goal for the trip was to collect every kyber crystal (including the extremely rare black crystal), which she was ranting about weeks before the trip. She did eventually find a black crystal, and was certain that it was the highlight of the trip. While they were building their lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop, Nicole had some issues getting her kyber crystal in the chamber. Bryce took the hilt to fix the issue and put the ring on top of the crystal, got down on one knee and proposed. Nicole only remembers seeing the gorgeous ring lit up by the purple light from the crystal, and of course said yes!
Athena and Nicole first met in 2010 at a corporate labor camp in San Diego where they initially bonded over Nicole’s love of fossil fuels, bald eagles, Ronald Reagan, crap rock, and most importantly, freedom. This bond forged a friendship that has become one of the most important in Athena’s life, and she is absolutely thrilled to see Nicole walk down the aisle and to be a part of such a special day. At a time when Athena was new to San Diego, Nicole was one of the first people to really befriend her, no questions asked – everyone who knows Nicole well knows that she somehow manages to be the glue that holds an otherwise seemingly random group of friends together – and for that Athena is eternally grateful. Through months of endless overtime, the lizard lounge, whiskey slurpees, sketchy hotels in Arizona, Friendsgivings, Hensgivings, wet specimen parties, Hawaiian Wolls, a decade of National Mean Girls days, that one time they were trapped at a 2 Broke Girls taping for 12 hours because of Lindsay Lohan, countless trips to the movie theater (mostly for Marvel/Star Wars premiers and other good movies, but also some decidedly awful ones), one massively flooded apartment followed by a month in a hotel, baby Yoda wine and paint nights and more, Nicole has been there for Athena through thick and thin. Athena has also become a devoted auntie to her feline nephews, Dylan and Apollo, who are Nicole’s pride and joy. Athena has managed to escape California to the wilds of Portland, Oregon and while still technically working at the aforementioned corporate labor camp remotely, she is now in a much more desirable position in business tech. She enjoys hiking and exploring her new surroundings, adult beverages, complaining about the current political situation, binge watching decades worth of television in a weekend, getting the most out of her unlimited Regal Theaters pass, all things Nintendo, and incessantly watching videos of cats and other small animals on the internet.
Nicole and Ashley met at Lutheran High School Westland and quickly bonded over their love for pop punk music and the men that came with it. Ashley has countless memories with Nicole – all of those came with hysterical “WTF” moments including, but not limited to, tripping over chairs at scene shows, flinging paint out of Nicole’s Ford Explorer all over Ashley’s parents driveway, the gifting of a pet hamster, Warped Tours, exploring abandoned buildings, and listening to ‘At Your Funeral’ on repeat on an illegally burned CD. Nicole has been a true friend through the years, and she has a heart of gold – always willing to go out of her way to help a pal out. Ashley has been truly blessed to share some of the happiest moments of her life with Nicole and the Tuffxcore crew. Ashley lives in Southeast Michigan with her husband, daughter, and two cats. Ashley is a speech language pathologist and is quickly approaching 100 houseplants (thanks COVID).
Jenny met Nicole in the before times, the Millennium Laboratories times. Their first conversation consisted of green beans and discussion of red tailed hawks. While it made absolutely no sense to the people around them on lunch break, they have continued to strike up conversation over a decade on all things nerdy including the craziness of San Diego Comic Con. Sometimes Nicole even dons the appearance of Jeff Bezos, and kills Jenny dead while blaming it on friends. The mark of true friendship. All jokes aside, Jenny is excited to be a part of Nicole’s next chapter with Bryce. Jenny is a San Diego native and has known Nicole for roughly a decade. They frequently meetup around Comic Conventions, Marvel movie releases, and online in games such as Overwatch and Among Us. She currently resides in San Diego with her husband, dog, cat, and numerous collectibles and costumes. Jenny is a true nerd outside of her hobbies as well, working as a Molecular Biologist in the region’s booming biotech industry.
Nicole and Ruth go way back to the track team at Lutheran High Westland, which Nicole joined as a joke and, for some reason, didn’t quit. It was all for the best, though, as the two became fast friends due to the mediating presence of the third person of Tuffxcore, Ashley. Their friendship was cultivated and cemented through a whirlwind of awkward scene shows, dinners at Olive Garden, philosophical disputes, and Nicole’s steadfast virtues of loyalty and generosity. Twenty years later, Nicole lives 2,326.5 miles away from Lutheran Westland while Ruth lives two, but, gratefully, their friendship has withstood the test of time and distance. Ruth is a wife, a mother of three, and an English professor at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan. She enjoys running, singing alto in the church choir, and unsuccessfully searching for Silent Hero songs on YouTube.
Sarah is another former Millennium Labs minion who Nicole took under her wing both professionally and personally. They lived together in San Diego for several years and managed not to drive each other crazy, despite that time Sarah opened Nicole’s new Thor figurine without asking. Pillars of their friendship include reliving past work and crazy roommate traumas, celebrating Friendsgiving, quoting Mean Girls, and pickle and peanut butter sandwiches. Sarah migrated from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2014(despite many protests from Nicole, Apollo, and Dylan) and now works with candy instead of urine. She currently lives in Long Beach with her boyfriend and two turtles. Although admittedly very nervous about being a bridesmaid for the first time, she once did an emergency pants swap with Nicole in their work bathroom so she feels reasonably qualified. Hopefully nothing of the sort happens at the wedding (or ever again) but if it does, Sarah and her pants will always be faithfully standing by.
Brett and Bryce share countless memories with many of life’s “firsts” together, travel adventures, music events, and even in their adult years still bond over technology advances and challenges. Brett admires Bryce’s caring nature, eagerness to seek new culinary experiences, and his compassion for others. This is how Brett knows that Bryce and Nicole are gonna be great. Brett is honored to be best man for his little brother and wishes the two a happy marriage.
Charlie met Bryce while they were young. Too young to know any better. Middle school was filled with hauling CRT monitors around for LAN parties. High school was mostly the same with little extras like seeing Joshua Tree or Spain. Time flowed from Brendan to bistek, from Ultima Online to Ultima IX. Then they went to the same college with fewer LAN parties and CRT monitors, but more fraternity parties and Taqueria Mexico. Following college, fraternity parties became playing games on Steam and Taqueria Mexico became Friendsgiving. Luckily, Charlie is still local to San Diego with his wife and dog, Arrietty, and they are all excited to help celebrate Bryce and Nicole’s union.
